Family Weekend Workshops: Make Your Mark!

Saturday, Oct 21, 2023
11 am—5 pm
Tickets free with reservations

Overview

Choose an image from a pre-printed selection of photos or snap your own at the Snap Yourself photo booth and then use different art techniques to create works inspired by artists Andy Warhol and Julie Mehretu. Both Warhol and Mehretu convey personal messages about the world surrounding them through mark-making, color, and photo manipulation. While Warhol’s works often used portraits or popular products to talk about American culture and consumerism, Mehretu uses pictures and drawings layered atop images of cities to describe movement and emotion.

Take a photo of yourself to transform into a Warhol-style portrait or feel inspired by Mehretu and create movement using maps of Los Angeles as your canvas. And don’t forget to visit The Broad’s third-floor galleries to see and get inspired by the artworks of both Julie Mehretu and Andy Warhol!

Family Weekend Workshops take place outdoors on the East-West Bank Plaza at The Broad and offer free activities and workshops to engage with the art on view in the museum. Workshops give families the opportunity to make their own artworks to take home, inspired by the Broad collection and works on view in the museum. Family Weekend Workshops are free with advance ticket reservations. Ticketholders also have access to the museum galleries where they can use the family audio guide narrated by LeVar Burton and participate in a scavenger hunt. Walk-ups without reserved tickets may be accommodated, pending capacity.
