Family Weekend Workshops: Layered Looks
Overview
Invite your imagination to roam as we create colorful vignettes that tell the story of you, inspired by Broad collection artist, Lari Pittman. Vignettes are brief descriptions or accounts, small illustrations or portraits, or ornamental designs filling otherwise empty space. Explore the layered worlds of Pittman’s art, where narrative, symbolism, and bold design converge to create powerful visual stories. Then, create your own using stencils, stamps, rubbing plates, fabric tiles, and more.
Based in Los Angeles, Lari Pittman is a Colombian-American artist known for his vibrant, detailed artworks that blend bold colors, patterns, and symbolism in every inch of the canvas. Inspired by textile design and the decorative arts—art that marries beauty and function—Pittman draws inspiration from many sources, including his heritage, personal identity, and world events. In these, he creates thought-provoking paintings that bring together diverse elements, including words, symbols, pictures, and textures, to convey important themes and form cohesive narratives.
This iteration of The Broad’s Family Weekend Workshops is presented as part of Grand Avenue Arts: All Access. See the full schedule of activities and destinations to explore on Grand Avenue on Saturday at grandavearts.org.
