Overview

Celebrate the closing day of the special exhibition, Jeffrey Gibson: the space in which to place me in community! Co-presented with The Chapter House, get inspired by Jeffrey Gibson’s bold colors and creative use of beadwork to make your own one-of-a-kind piece! Explore a freeform beading activity designed by artist Kimberly Robertson (Mvskoke) as we mark the closing of this powerful show which Forbes described as “…a joyous explosion of color mixed in masterful patterns that incorporate Indigenous craftwork and traditions as well as text and titles resonant of US history and American pop culture."

Family Weekend Workshops offer free activities and workshops to engage with the art on view in the museum. Workshops give families the opportunity to make their own artworks to take home, inspired by the Broad collection. Family Weekend Workshops are free with advance ticket reservations. Walk-ups without reserved tickets may be accommodated, pending capacity.

Born in Colorado in 1972, interdisciplinary artist Jeffrey Gibson is a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent. Gibson received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 and his Master of Arts in painting from the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998. Throughout his career, Gibson has centered Indigenous and LGBTQ+ perspectives, exploring cultural authenticity, stereotypes of Native people, and how aesthetics circulate amongst different groups. Vibrant colors, geometric patterns and found objects are common throughout his art, resulting in a distinct visual language that celebrates interconnectedness and assemblage.

The Chapter House

The Chapter House

The Chapter House is creating space for Indigenous art, empowerment and community. A large part of the modern Native experience is protest. While protests are crucial to fight for Indigenous sovereignty and dignity, there are few spaces in urban centers off of reservations for Natives to convene, discuss, and heal when protests end—and fewer that celebrate the importance of art and artists to Indigenous Peoples.

The Chapter House is a place for Indigenous Peoples and allies to appreciate art, convene and collaborate, celebrate individual and shared Indigenous cultures, and explore the complexities of the 21st Century Indigenous experience. This is a space for Indigenous empowerment and community, but all who share a desire for universal empowerment are welcome here.
