More from the Vault. New Art on View.

Unfolding now through October, The Broad is reinstalling nearly two-thirds of its collection galleries, bringing more than 30 works out of the vault. Highlights include pairings of works by Cindy Sherman and John Baldessari, Urs Fischer and Jonas Wood, and Anselm Kiefer and Kara Walker, along with changes in the Takashi Murakami gallery and much more throughout the third floor.

These changes mean new artworks to see each month, offering a chance to see more of The Broad's over 2,000-works collection and a preview of what's to come. When the expanded museum opens in 2028, gallery space will grow by 70%.

JOHN BALDESSARI

John Baldessari (1931–2020) was a founder and innovator of conceptual art. From the mid-1960s, he tested the structures of art, images, and language within a radical, conceptual framework. Baldessari used photographs, text, and color as starting points to uncover the visual and ideological mechanics of sight and thought, believing that one of the purposes of art is “to keep us perceptually off balance.”

CINDY SHERMAN

Since the mid-1970s, Cindy Sherman (b. 1954) has serially photographed herself. Her photographs are not self-portraits; rather, Sherman becomes a wide cast of characters in the work, reflecting on the role of images in the formation of identity, stereotype, and representation.
