Bruce Nauman - Ten Heads Circle/Up and Down

Go on. Count them: One, two, three, four, five heads facing right side up as if an invisible body was supporting the heads from below. And, one, two, three, four, five heads on top of those heads flipped upside down like they're dangling from an invisible pair of feet fastened to the ceiling.
Ten Heads Circle/Up and Down by Bruce Nauman is just what it says in the title. Isn't it? We count ten heads. They are arranged in a circle and some are facing up while others are facing down. Bruce made ten different casts of people's heads. That means he made ten unique molds and poured wax into the molds to create the shape of the head. Many of the strange facial features you see on the heads are from the process of making the mold and casting the wax.
Usually, bumps are smoothed down after the cast is made, but Bruce left all the bumps and imperfections there. The seams on the side of the heads are where the two sides of the mold meet. The bumpy nostrils are from the nose plugs. The models’ eyes are closed so no mold making material gets in them. It can get a bit claustrophobic having your head cast.
The expression on the faces is not as peaceful as a sleeping face would be. Is it? The faces of the heads are animated in their expressions, but they are eerily lifeless with their tense, closed eyes.
