Charles Ray - Fall '91

From afar this woman might look normal size, but as you get closer, [SOUNDFX] you realize just how big she is. That’s one large lady!

This work is called Fall ‘91, and it’s by the artist called Charles Ray.

Charles made three of these large women. Each in different poses, and with different colors of hair and suits.

All three are 30% larger than standard mannequins you’d see at a department store, so he really makes you think about scale.

At 8 feet tall, she’s bigger than the tallest pro basketball players!

You may be used to being around much taller people, but most grown-ups aren’t. Does your grown-up look small? [SOUNDFX] Tell them it’s going to be OK.

The title is about the clothes she is wearing, from that time. A look from the Fall season of 1991. She’s wearing a smart pink suit, and a no-nonsense look on her face. She’s confident, and business-like.

“What do you think this woman is like, and why do you think she’s like that?” is what Charles is asking you consider. He’s asking you to think about the judgements you might make on this mannequin, which, just may reflect some of your thoughts on women and their place in the world.
